Friday Fun With Alternative Therapies

What am  I?

  • In the Middle Ages I was known as ‘white gold’
  • Every cell in your body contains me
  • I was once the standard currency of Ethiopia

I am…salt.

So how, I am sure you are wondering am I (Rach – not salt) going to link these interesting facts to our charity? Well first let me confirm that I am not a doctor or in any way medically trained and these views are my own…

A few weeks ago I was flicking through a magazine when I read about a lady with chronic sinusitis who had tried Salt Therapy. Previously she had complained about having permanently blocked sinuses and how when she sneezed it was often 5-6 sneezes at a time. I read along with interest as I suffer from this and 5-6 sneezes at a time is nothing when I get started, so decided to give it a try.

I found my local ‘cave’ which is really the decorated back room of a shop and booked my appointment. When inside, you simply relax on a sun lounger in a room covered in salt. Seeing the salt on the ground is quite a surreal experience as your brain automatically thinks snow, but I didn’t want to taste it just to double-check!

I found the visit extremely relaxing and sure enough my sinuses were a lot less blocked the following few days. It was only after re-watching the Dante video that I considered this may help people with Poland Syndrome, who due to the missing chest muscle often find it more difficult to shake off coughs and colds.

By breathing in the tiny salt particles, it allows them to reach your lungs and respiratory tracts which helps loosen the mucus and aid recovery.

As always, we’d love to hear what our readers think.  Have you or your family tried any alternative therapies and if so did you feel the benefit?
